Welcome good Gentles, greetings to you from the Shire of Hartshorn-dale.
The SCA is an international organization dedicated to the study and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century life. While the majority of our members focus on European history and culture, we also encourage the exploration of other cultures that interacted with Europe during that time.
We do this by holding events where we explore all aspects of Medieval and Renaissance life, including food, clothing, martial arts, and arts and sciences.
The Shire of Hartshorn-Dale holds many regular practices and activities. Everyone is welcome. No special clothing, skills, or knowledge is required. Just show up ready to learn.
Archery. Archery practice typically meets on Tuesday nights in the summer. Loaner equipment is available.
Arts and Sciences. The Arts and Sciences include handcrafts, fine arts, performing arts, as well as research on all aspects of how people lived their lives during our time period. Our Shire includes members who practice many skills, including embroidery, sewing, spinning, silk banner painting, making glass beads (lampworking), wood-block printing, dancing, cooking, Illumination, bronze casting, and brewing. The Shire holds a monthly workshop on the third Thursday of the month.
Business Meetings. Come get involved in the running of YOUR Shire! The monthly business meeting, held on the first Thursday of the month, provides an overview of current and upcoming activities and events.
Cooking. Our cooking group experiments with creating dishes from period recipes.
Dancing. Dance practice is held every Friday. Come learn bransles, pavanes, and popular Italian Renaissance and English Country dances.
Demos. In addition to events and practices, Shire members often provide demonstrations of the many things we do. In the past, we’ve done demos for the Boy Scouts, schools, and local organizations. Contact the seneschal (at firstname.lastname@example.org) if you’re interested in having us do one for you.
Fencing. Fencing practice is held every Monday. Loaner equipment is available.
Heavy Combat. Learn how to fight with sword and shield! Practices meet most Tuesdays.
Newcomers’ Gatherings. Where to start!
Thrown Weapons. Thrown Weapons practice in the Shire is on hiatus.
Children and Youth Activities. Activities just for children and youth are held at some events and practices.
In addition to the Shire’s local practices, events are held all over the kingdom and are listed in the East Kingdom Event Calendar. Neighboring SCA groups also hold many activities and events that are open to all. These include the Barony of Bhakail (Philadelphia and Delaware County), Shire of Buckland Cross (Bucks County), Shire of Caer Adamant (State of Delaware), and Shire of Owlsherst (York County). Atlantia, the kingdom to the south of the East Kingdom, has a calendar of events as well.
